Senior architect at the Architecture Design Center in Japan's Hitachi Ltd. Mohamed Mahmoud Ibrahim announced that Egypt managed to manufacture its first "On Board Computer".

The satellite computer was designed and assembled at Benha Electronics company, affiliated to the Military Production Ministry, Ibrahim announced at a conference titled "Egypt Can 3 ..by sons of the Nile", held in Luxor city.

The Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) were also designed and manufactured at the Egyptian company.

Cooperation between the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS), under Dr. Ayman Mahmoud, and Japan's Hitachi Ltd. culminated in the manufacture of this computer, Ibrahim said.

The first Egyptian satellite computer was approved by Kyushu Institute of Technology established Center for Nano satellite Testing (CeNT), he said.

The radiation effect on the computer was also tested by Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application (TIARA), he added.

The term "On Board Computer" indicates, rather obviously, any unit flying on board a satellite which provides processing capability. However, the On Board Computer, or OBC, more commonly refers to as the computer of the satellite.
